Frequently asked questions
WHAT IS A CERTIFIED CANADIAN COUNSELLOR?
As a Certified Canadian Counsellor, I have met minimal professional standards to practice independently as a counsellor. In order to be certified, I must meet certain levels of education and training in counselling, follow the code of ethics, are held accountable to show competent and ethical performance in practice.
WHAT CAN I EXPECT DURING THE FIRST SESSION?
The first session is an opportunity for you to begin telling me your story; that is, what brought you to seek counselling. We talk about your concerns, what you hope to gain, as well as the counselling process moving forward. During this first session, paperwork is also completed.
HOW LONG ARE SESSIONS?
Sessions are 50-minutes long. This allows for time within the hour to complete counselling related tasks such as notes and billing.
What is the Consent Process for Youth
Clients under the age of 18 require the consent of both parents or a guardian to engage in counselling
IS WHAT I DISCLOSE CONFIDENTIAL?
What you disclose is confidential. Prior to starting therapy, at the beginning of the first session, we will review confidentiality, including how any information cannot be shared without your written permission. There are, however, three exceptions (limits) where I have an obligation to report and would be required to break confidentiality:
1. If I suspect abuse or neglect of a vulnerable person such as a child, dependent adult, or elderly person.
2. If you are at risk of harm to yourself or someone else.
3. If I receive a court subpoena to access my files.
WHAT IS YOUR RATE?
Shauna's rate is $160 per 50-minute session. This rate is the same whether for in-office, telephone, or video counselling. Fees are to be paid in full by e-transfer or credit card at the end of each session.
Amber's rate is $220 per 50-minute session. This rate is the same whether for in-office, telephone, or video counselling. Fees are to be paid in full by e-transfer or credit card at the end of each session.
DO YOU PROVIDE A SLIDING FEE SCALE?
We offer compassion pricing for those facing financial barriers. Please contact us to discuss further.
DO YOU DIRECT BILL TO INSURANCE?
We do not direct bill to insurance companies at this time. However, you will be provided with a receipt for counselling services paid, which may be submitted to your insurance company for reimbursement. Coverage and the amount reimbursed will depend on your plan. Fees not reimbursed can be deducted as medical expenses on your income tax return.
DO YOU HAVE A CANCELLATION POLICY?
We have a 48-hour cancellation policy. The policy is that if a session is canceled with less than 24-hours’ notice, or missed, then the full session fee must be paid.
Additionally, payment must be received prior to rescheduling another appointment.
